
Hardware device is required for dialing or receiving calls using Voice over IP (VoIP) which allows you to listen and speak. You might need a complete set of network equipment, including routers and phone adapters or simply a headset with your PC. The equipment or accessories that can be used with the Voice over IP telephony services other than the regular devices like computers, modems etc.

• Analog Telephone Adapters (ATA) – ATA is a device, which converts the analog voice signals into the digital data signals and then fragmenting this data into packets to be transmitted over the Internet. An ATA is a small box with power adaptor, one or more telephone ports and one Ethernet port.
• Headset – A headset is a very general multimedia device which allows you to input your voice by using a microphone and to hear the audio from your computer. There are many types of headsets like Bluetooth’s headset, USB headset, one-ear headset, two-ear headset etc.
• IP phones – IP phones are specially designed to be used for VoIP like SIP phones. IP phones are very much similar to the POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) or PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Networks) phones, but they have an internal ATA.
• Softphones – A softphone is a software program that allows talking using Voice over IP without using a physical phone set.
• PC Handsets – It is similar to the telephones, but they connect to the computer through sound card or USB port. It works together with IP phones and softphones.
• VoIP Routers – If you are using an ADSL broadband connection in a company network or at home, then you need to have an ADSL router, which connects devices to the Internet or WAN. Wireless router is required for the wireless Internet connection.
• Webcam – Video conferencing and video calls significantly enhance communication services. Webcam is required for video conferencing and video calls.
• Sound Card – It allows the computer to send audio information to any compatible audio device. Many modern computers have inbuilt sound card in the motherboard. Else, you have to install a sound card in a PCI slot on the motherboard. Sound card is also known as sound adaptor, audio adaptor and audio card.
